Taopatch® TMJ and temporomandibular disorders: the results of the 2026 study

Do you suffer from jaw pain? You're not alone. 5-12% of the population has temporomandibular joint (TMJ) disorders. Difficulty chewing, phonation, even smiling: TMJ disorders affect everyday life silently but constantly. But a team of researchers from seven universities (including the University of Bari, San Raffaele in Rome and the Medical University of Sofia) observed immediate and statistically significant improvements in adults and children with the use of the nanotechnological medical device Taopatch®

How Taopatch® works in dentistry

Composed of Quantum Dots nanocrystals that convert body heat into therapeutic light, Taopatch® can help modulate the neuromuscular response. The emitted wavelengths penetrate the tissues, promoting a reduction in inflammation and modulation of pain. The clinical study

The study was conducted on 149 people, divided into three groups: a placebo group (43 individuals), an adult group (73) with an average age of 33 years and a children group (76) with an average age of 10 years. In each group, the maximum mouth opening (in mm) and the level of pain under pressure on the jaw muscles were measured, before and after the device was placed in front of the ear on both sides.

The results: the groups compared

Measurements were taken approximately 3 minutes after application. In adults, a more open mouth (from 48.4 mm to 51.4 mm) and less pain were observed: on the pain scale from 0–10 it went from 4.9 to 3.2. In children, even more marked improvements were seen with a mouth opening of 45.5 mm to 48.5 mm and a pain threshold of 5.7 to 3.7. Both adult and pediatric patients reported zero side effects.

As for the placebo group , there was no change, no change in mouth opening or difference in pain threshold. The results suggest that the observed effect is attributable to the specific action of the device, not to contextual or expectant factors.

What does it mean for you as a professional?

This study was carried out to verify the clinical efficacy of Taopatch® TMJ, the most widely used model in dental practices. Over the years, our professionals have reported how this device (and other models in the Taopatch® family) can promote not only the opening of the mouth, facilitating long procedures such as endodontics, conservative and hygiene, but also the rebalancing of the cranio-mandible muscles, with benefits that extend to the posture and balance of the patient as a whole.

Integrating Taopatch® into your practice means having a complementary tool to conservative therapies already in use (such as bites) with a safety profile confirmed also in the pediatric field and an effect detectable within minutes of application. A device that can make the therapeutic path more comfortable for the patient and more efficient for you. Find out how to integrate it into your practice in the section dedicated to professionals

What does this mean for you as a patient?

If you live with jaw pain, difficulty opening your mouth or muscle tension in your face and neck, this study brings concrete news: there is non-invasive support, without drugs and without side effects, which can complement the therapies you are already following.

Taopatch® TMJ can help make every session more effective and recovery faster. Ask your dentist or orthodontist – more and more professionals are integrating it into their daily practice.

In conclusion, the study published in Advances in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery (Elsevier, 2026) brings scientific evidence to what Taopatch-certified® professionals have been observing in clinical practice for years. Science and clinical practice are converging in the same direction. Taopatch® TMJ is already there.
